At the end of last week, we began a small reasearch project on Commedia Dell'arte. I was tasked to make a short presenation about its origin while my peers focused on its influence and purpose.
Before our research, I had known about how Commedia had traditional stock characters and the kind of comedy that was portrayed. Now I learned more about its history and how it helped develop theatre to what we know today. With learning that Commedia has influenced wriers such as Moliere and Shakespeare, I began to see how they have been influenced. Though it can't be as clear at times, characters in modern plays still have the same characteristics and roles as they did back then. Similarly, I found that the jokes that they would have are still present today. Acts such as throwing grapes at another character or chasing each other around are still comedic elements that lives up to today.
I learned that Commedia was such an influential style of theatre. It gave women a chance to participate in theatre and proved that theatre can transcend languages.
We are going to continue our research on Commedia Dell'arte, this time with the focus on its conventions.
