Starting Points - Assumptions

This week we talked about the theme of assumptions. In this journal, I'll be listing other examples that possibly relate to that.

Event or Topics

LGBTQ+ Movement

The LGBTQ+ community has always been faced with assumptions and judgement. The recognition of the community within this decade has helped the world and its people grow to be more open-minded toward these topics.

Elections

Election whether it's national politics or even student council elections is based on assumptions. Your idea on how a person will strive for the future, depends on your own desires.

Fake news

Fake news are very prominent especially in this era of technology. These kinds of news can take forms of gossip or entirely false information. All of it is based on how it is circulated and given the chance, it can cause for miscommunications.

Idea, Issue, Question or Theme

Why do we assume?

This is just a basic question relating to the topic of assumptions. But it can lead to further discussions of ourselves.

Societal norms

We may often think the a person is cool, beautiful or unfit based on what is considered "average" or "normal". We often criticize those who don't fit in those boxes of normality.

Who are we beyond what others think?

In this world where social media plays a role in our self-image, how often do we look for other people to justify our beauty, intelligence and value. But beyond that, can we truly be ourselves without someone there to tell us?

Books

Out of my Mind by Sharon Draper

About a girl named melody who was born unable to speak, walk, write or do anything on her own. The book explores her struggles living with cerebral palsy, as people dismisses her due difficulty to communicating.

One of us is Lying by Karen M. McManus

The characters within this book are all based on stereotypes. There is the brain, the beauty, the criminal, the athlete, and the outcast. As a one of them dies during a session of detention, the four other characters are judged and accused. Throughout the book, the stereotypes that they associate with, works for or against them in finding out who was the murderer. But as any old tale, they realize that everyone is not who they seem.

Feed by M.T Anderson

In a society of advanced technology, the FEED is implanted in people's brain, allowing everyone's thoughts, wants and needs to be analysed. Throughout the novel, the Feed is a tool that helps the narrator, Titus, in his daily life. The technology assumes what the person needs, and caters content based on them. This relationship of assuming bleeds into human relationships, as people fail to properly communicate.

Videos

This video shows kids meeting each other in reverse. They were first given the opportunity to talk and learn about each other and then see if they;re assumptions about each other was correct. I think it was interesting for kids to be the one participating in this instead of adults. I also thought the whole concept of meeting people in reverse was an intriguing and led me to wonder whether or not it ultimately influenced their impression of one another.

This video focuses on racial stereotypes. It shows a waitress who assumed that the girl who looked of Asian descent to be able to speak Japanese. Though the people she is with does speak Japanese, the waitress refuse to acknowledge what they are saying. I though that it was interesting that she fails to accepts that the girl does not know any Japanese, due to her physical appearance.

This video is similar to the first one, with its format of meeting people and talking to them. One of the reasons why this video caught my attention was the title "Try not to offend anyone". I though that it was interesting that it was assumed that meeting people in the video would result in negative judgement.
