In the third week into the project, I delved deeper into researching Talchum Mask Dance. I found out that Mask dances originated as rituals and soon evolved to be a traditional performance art of Korea. Plotlines would be simple, such as a man venturing for new opportunities or a love story between two rich individuals. Furthermore, I found information about how music and costumes are used in performing. Music would be played with tradition instruments to accompany the dance or even a scene. As for costumes, not only they would determine the character an actor was playing but it was also used to present their movement in a unique way and elegant manner.
For this tradition, I wanted to focus on movement, as that is the most vital characteristic. I have found several videos that demonstrate and explain the kinds of movements that were performed. Below is a Talchum Mask Dance performance, to give a sense of what the tradition is like.
